Australian film Blame opened at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday night, and the word on the street is it’s proving incredibly popular – the opening session sold out and the last remaining sessions are selling quickly.
The critical response has been encouraging too. The Hollywood Reporter had this to say:
“Revenge is served cold-bloodedly in this small but well-crafted thriller from Down Under. A strong cast of up-and-comers helps first-time writer-director Michael Henry maintain tension as he carefully teases out the plot twists …”
The film has been pounding the festival circuit prior to its general release, which is scheduled for early 2011 in Australia. It premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival in July and when it finishes its stint at TIFF the team will present it at the Chicago International Film Festival (which kicks off next month).
Shot entirely in Western Australia (in the Roleystone region of the Perth foothills) across four weeks in February this year, Blame boasts a cracking ensemble cast. Sophie Lowe (Beautiful Kate, Blessed), Simon Stone (Balibo, Kokoda, Jindabyne), Kestie Morassi (Wolf Creek, Dirty Deeds, Satisfaction, Underbelly), Mark Leonard Winter (Balibo, Van Diemen’s Land), Ashley Zukerman (Ch10’s Rush), and 2009 AFI-winner Damian de Montemas (Underbelly, Secret Life of Us), all appear in the film.
Young vigilantes find their coldly calculated murder plot unraveling at the seams in this compact little thriller set in a remote corner of Australian bushland.
A strong cast of up-and-comers helps first-time writer-director Michael Henry maintain tension as he carefully teases out the plot twists to make the most of a single location and a deceptively simple concept.
Although a generally tight script stumbles in the second act as the characters chase their tails for a while, the suspense is otherwise skillfully modulated and places “Blame” squarely in the front row of a recent spate of young-adult thriller/horror films out of Australia.
It’s a raw first effort but a fine calling card for Henry and his young actors as it makes its way around the festival circuit after a warm reception at the recent Melbourne International Film Festival. It opens domestically next month.

RISING star Sophie Lowe confirmed she is among the top contenders for the much- hyped role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s film adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
The actor, pictured in town for the world premiere of Blame for the Melbourne International Film Festival last night, said being chosen for a chance to play the heavily pierced and tattooed heroine of Stieg Larsson’s best selling Swedish crime novels was a dream come true.
“I was flown over especially for that last week,” Lowe said. “I met David Fincher for the screen test, it was amazing and is so surreal I was in the category with all these amazing actresses.”The Beautiful Kate beauty, Sydney theatre actress Sarah Snook, American actor Rooney Mara and French star Lea Seydoux, are among those being considered for the role after Juno’s Ellen Page and Natalie Portman reportedly missed out on the final cut for the highly anticipated film.
Lowe said she was a huge fan of the Swedish Millennium Trilogy and would even consider getting pierced for the role of the brooding hacker with Asperger syndrome, as did actor Noomi Rapace, who plays Salander in the Swedish film version.
“Let’s just see what happens first, but anything is possible,” she said.
James Bond star Daniel Craig has been cast as journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the film, set to be released next year.
