Sophie Lowe, who received critical acclaim for her performance in the controversial film Beautiful Kate, says that she’s “really looking forward to Hanna, I’m so excited”. Lowe will also appear in the upcoming psychological thriller Blame, from writer/director Michael Henry which is due to be released in cinemas on the 16th of June. “The experience [on Blame] was amazing but it was really difficult because it was really, really hot – 40 degrees each day in W.A. But the cast was absolutely amazing and I learnt so much from every single one of them, and I’m really proud of the film. My character was really fun to play. She was a bit naughty” she laughs.

How cool is Sophie Lowe? She came in this week and had her hair and make up done at Valonz by Mark McCarthy for the Instyle Awards – she has such a cheeky personality. I think Mark did such a great job. Her hair looks beautiful and her gorgeous face just glows!

Australian Actress, Sophie Lowe, talks the Slap, fashion and being Beautiful Kate in her exclusive interview with This & That. Enjoy! x
T&T: Tell us a bit about where you grew up and how you got into acting?
S: I was born in Yorkshire, England. I came to Australia in 2000 when I was 10 years old. I met people at my new school who were into performing arts, and it was then that I developed a strong passion for acting. So I decided to make the change to a performing arts school. At first I attended the school for singing and dancing but then through that, I found acting, and I realised that I didn’t want to do anything else. So I got an agent, one that was based in my school, and I started auditioning.
T&T: How important was it to have a woman, Rachel Ward, directing Beautiful Kate, considering the nature of the female characters in the film?
S: Really, very important. Rachel wanted the female characters to be strong and powerful, and I am sure her own experience as a woman helped the actors bring their characters to life. It certainly helped me feel comfortable with the material I had to address in the script with the character of Kate.
T&T: Which actors do you most admire?
S: Cate Blanchett is amazing. I’d love to work with her. I’d also love to work with the incredible director, Sofia Coppola.
T&T: How would you describe your personal style?
S: I don’t like patterns that much. I’m a pretty simple, casual girl. I usually stick to uncomplicated designs.
T&T: Which project have you most enjoyed so far, and why?
S: I am currently filming the Slap, an ABC mini-series based on the novel by Christos Tsiolkas. I’m really enjoying it – there’s such a great diversity of characters. I feel really proud to be involved and I can’t wait to see the finished product!
T&T: Tell us a bit about your character and the experience of filming.
S: Well, Connie is seventeen, her parents passed away when she was younger, and now she’s looked-after by her aunty. Throughout the series she falls dangerously in love with a 40-year old man. She’s an intelligent and mature young woman, who just wants to be loved.
T&T: When you aren’t acting, what makes you happy?
S: Being around people I love. I also write music. I try and keep creative and inspired in any way I can. I think that’s always so important.
T&T: Where do you hope to be in 10 years time?
S: Where ever I am, I hope I’m still doing the thing I love!

While sipping on a glass of bubbly i had a brief chat with the beautiful actress Sophie Lowe.
TG:Hi Sophie!
SL: Hi!
TG:Tell me is this your first Australian fashion week?
SL: Well this is the first fashion week i’ve really got into.I went to fashion week 2 years ago,my first show ever i was in the front row and it was really, really cool..but this time i’m in Sydney so i’m gonna go to as many as i can!
TG:And when do you think you first realized you were into fashion?
SL:Oh gosh..I think it was in school, i was experimenting with all these things and i found this old shirt of my dad’s and i was like-i love this! So i cut it up , it was all worn out and i’m like : this is cool,i don’t know something clicked and i was like-that’s it i love fashion! And my mum is really fashionable too so i think i get it from her..
TG:Did you ever go through a weird style stage? I went through an awkward punk stage at 13 and wore way too much pale make-up, now when i look at the pictures ,i’m like eeewww…
SL: Oh yeah! I went through a weird stage, my hair was too short, all dyed different colours, black nails..a weird emo stage!
TG: What is your lust item right now?
SL: Hmmm…There is this Acne suit, it’s blue and i wore it on a shoot for Oyster magazine, their online thing, it was amazing ..like it was made for me.
TG: And who are you looking forward to seeing?
SL: I’m excited for Fernando Frisoni and Josh Goot-two of my favourites.

INCEST, adultery and child abuse: Sophie Lowe doesn’t shy from controversial roles. The 20-year-old Sydney actress known for her confronting performance in Rachel Ward’s incest-filled Beautiful Kate is about to embark on yet another challenging role in the TV series The Slap.
Adapted from the award-winning book by Australian author Christos Tsiolkas, Lowe will play Connie, an orphaned teenager who has an affair with a 40-year-old man, roughly the same age as Lowe’s father Ian Lowe.
“Connie is such a great character,” Lowe said. “She is a teenager coming of age and working herself out, and she is experiencing all these new emotions.”

Having had a “too happy” upbringing, Lowe said she was attracted to more unconventional roles when auditioning.
“They do attract me so I can challenge myself and see if I can do it,” she said. “But I don’t really plan it. I just connect with more challenging and meaningful roles that people can relate to.
“That’s kind of where I hover, too. It’s easier for me to cry in a scene than laugh. It’s weird. I have trouble laughing because I always feel like it’s really fake.”
Lowe said mentors such as Ward helped her deal with her more disturbing roles.
“If I didn’t have someone who was so warming and comforting I don’t think I would be able to do it,” she said.
The Slap follows the aftermath of a backyard barbecue gone wrong when a man slaps another guest’s son. The shocked boy’s parents call the police which then leads to messy legal action.
Lowe will join Melissa George, Alex Dimitriades and Sophie Okonedo in Melbourne tomorrow for rehearsals.
Actresses Krew Boylan, Sophie Lowe and Alyssa McClelland all wearing Mulberry at the Mulberry Christmas Party in Sydney.
What the girls plan for Christmas:
Krew Boylan: Spending Xmas day on Bronte Beach then heading North on a road trip convoy with mates, bring on summer holidays!
Sophie Lowe: I will be spending Christmas at home with my parents in Sydney. And I have decided that this year I will cook up a delicious FEAST!!!!
Alyssa McClelland: This Xmas I will be playing Sous-Chef to my brilliant sister who is Masterchef-style serving up a three-course gourmet feast to our masses of family in Sydney.

Sophie Lowe, the 20-year-old Brit-born actress is fast becoming a rising star in Australian cinema, even receiving an AFI nomination for her feature debut Beautiful Kate. Here’s what she said to TNT.
You must have been stoked about getting an AFI nomination for Best Actress in Beautiful Kate even though you didn’t end up winning?
That was really surreal – it still is. I still can’t believe that happened…What was it like working with director Rachel Ward on that film?
It was a really great experience. It was my first film and she made me feel really comfortable. She really believed in what I could bring to the role and so she just let me do my thing. The film deals with a love affair between brother and sister. How did you feel about that?
Rachel handled it so well, the script was so well written. I knew it was going to be controversial – which I love. Why do you love controversy?
Because it gets people’s attention and it makes people think differently about things, and pushes people’s boundaries…
